These are games that I own, or have access to, that I think would make good introductions for people who were curious about RPGs and would like to try a game. What's 'good', of course, depends on the player, but I can only work with what I've got. All of these games have either (a) universal themes or (b) easy-to-grasp systems, or both. They're all relatively, more or less, new and innovative.
Sex and death in a Roman Saturnalia. Can you entertain the other players with sexually explicit material?
I haven't yet played this game, and I think it would take a group of creative and uninhibited people. But given the right mix of ribaldry and creativity in the company, it would be a very easy game to pick up and play without fuss. A dinner party roleplaying game.
Play God's Watchdogs in a Wild West that never was. It's the setup for a subtle game of moral judgement as the Dogs exercise their power.
It Was a Mutual Decision
This is a game for adults or late teens. It deals with addiction, oppression, sexism, poverty, fear and stress, so for people who like to examine such issues it's very cool.
Primetime Adventures
The Princes' Kingdom
Otherkind
Prince Valiant would make a great game for thoughtful kids who liked myths and legends. Just like the original comic, it's an adventure yarn in the time of King Arthur.
A kooky dark comedy game set in a 1911 New England university. To win, you need to enslave yourself to the ancient power of the Roach--but you cannot win while you are enslaved.
Another easy to set up, dinner party game. Unusual in having a win condition.
How far will you go to get what you want? This is a game about people and their demons, and the bargains they make.
People either love or hate the central concept of this game. What's a 'trollbabe'? She's a 7-foot woman with horns, and she can kick your arse.
If you dig Vaughn Bodé and Robert Crumb, or Xena, Warrior Princess, you'll probably like Trollbabe.
This is a cool game for drama addicts.
