Some story games use unusual polyhedral dice. I've used abbreviations for these dice in many places: here's how you know what I'm talking about.

 

d4	four-sided die
d6	six-sided die
d8	eight-sided die
d10	ten-sided die
d12	twelve-sided die
d20	twenty-sided die

 

If the type of dice isn't specified, it usually means the game uses the standard six-sided dice.
